Mission Accomplished: How an Escape Room Brought Biodiversity to Life

How do you arouse curiosity about biodiversity - and how do you keep it alive? This is precisely the question addressed by supergut, an initiative that focuses on biodiversity in Liechtenstein in a playful, tangible, and relatable way. A particular challenge is to reach and inspire young people who are confronted with digital stimuli and many competing topics on a daily basis. The creative answer from supergut: an escape room.

Over a period of seven months, from September 2024 to March 2025, almost 6,000 people embarked on “The Hunt for Dr. Mo No” and played their way through the interactive escape room experience. Participants slipped into the role of undercover agents and set off in search of clues to one of the most pressing environmental issues of our time: how can we save biodiversity?

Excitement, fun, and teamwork made the topic of biodiversity embodied and exciting at the same time. The feedback was extremely positive and clearly exceeded our expectations.  We were especially pleased to reach 85% of the school classes from Liechtenstein, our most important target group - they made up almost half of all participants. And that was not the end of the story, because the goal is sustainable change. Proceeds from the entrance fees were given back to the young people in the form of a biodiversity competition. Students were invited to submit creative ideas for greening and enhancing their school grounds. The three most creative projects will receive funding to implement their projects.

While the Escape Room chapter is closed, the next one will soon begin: on May 22, 2025 - International Biodiversity Day - the event Tatort Biodiversität will take place in Schaan. The mission of supergut continues - and yes, a new project is in the starting blocks.
