German Intensive Courses for Refugees from Ukraine Using the LieLa Method
At the end of April, two German intensive courses for refugees from Ukraine were launched in Liechtenstein. Around thirty participants are learning the new language using the special, interactive method developed by Liechtenstein Languages (LieLa). In a short time, they will acquire the necessary basics to communicate in everyday situations.
The quickest way to get to know a new country is through its people. But how do you communicate without a common language? Learning German is mandatory for asylum seekers in Liechtenstein and is their personal contribution to integration. This also applies to the recently arrived refugees from Ukraine who wish to stay in Liechtenstein. Twice a week, German courses are organized for asylum seekers by the Refugee Aid Liechtenstein. In addition to this regular offering, the Hilti Foundation and the Liechtenstein Languages Association have launched an intensive program: Over eight weeks, participants will acquire the essential knowledge needed to communicate in daily life through daily lessons. Specific situations, such as finding one's way in a city, using public transportation, or handling official tasks, are practiced. The goal is for participants to reach the A2 level in listening and speaking within eight weeks, thereby facilitating both their social integration and their access to the job market.
The LieLa Methodology of Language Teaching
The Liechtenstein Languages method was developed in the 1980s. It focuses on the strengths and potentials of the learners, different learning styles, and the creation of a positive learning atmosphere. The lessons are playful, varied, and promote speaking. The method ensures that as many learners as possible are actively engaged at the same time. Activities are coordinated and paced so that the lessons can easily last several hours. The encouraging role of the teacher and the motivating learning environment help to break down learning barriers and maximize learning potential.
About LieLa Courses for Adult Refugees
Initially, the focus was on developing teaching materials in various languages for educators. However, at the initiative of H.S.H. Prince Stefan of Liechtenstein, a German course for refugees based on the LieLa methodology was developed during the "Refugee Crisis of 2015/2016."
The two modules, LieLa BASIS and LieLa WORKS, enable refugees to make themselves understood in their new environment after just eight intensive course weeks (120 hours). Those who have never been literate or have only been literate in a different script attend the parallel literacy program LieLa ALPHA.
The Hilti Foundation wishes all participants a successful course completion and sincerely thanks the Refugee Aid Liechtenstein and especially the LieLa Association for their excellent cooperation and the realization of this initiative.
